U.S. Navy Estimated Shipbuilding Costs (14 Aug 1947)
(Created 8 April 2024)

This chart was scanned by me in the U.S. National Archives II, College Park, MD almost about fifteen years ago. At the time; I thought I was just going to be in NARA for a day or so, and so I never actually wrote down where I found it, unfortunately. Let this be a lesson for all researchers, present and future -- always be writing down where you find stuff!

You can view the original scanned copies (HERE - Light Version / HERE - Dark Version).

For the online version on this page, I've taken the liberty of adding my guesses as to what classes each type represents in italics.

NOTE: The above estimates are based on the prevailing Labor Rate of $1.43 for the Industry and on Overhead Rate of 60% of Direct Labor. The Material figures include in each case the Propelling Machinery as Contractor Furnished even though that will not be true if construction of Submarines, some Auxiliary, Mine Craft, Patrol Craft, and Landing Craft were started.

All estimates are on a straight time basis and based on a (1) ship contract. The contract price would drop considerable if more than one ship is awarded to one builder.

The above estimates are for the use of the General Board only as an indication of costs of ships if awarded today. They have no relationship to ship cost under mass procurement.

With the exception of the Two (2) New Design Ships all estimates are based on the cost of the Proto Type Ship increased by prevailing labor and Material Indices. With the prevailing labor unrest it is anticipated that further increases in the overall cost will be necessary.
