FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY LANDING IN NORMANDY

June 6, 1984 marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy during World War II.

In announcing the invasion of Europe, General Dwight D. Eisenhower called upon "... all who love freedom to stand with us now. Together we shall achieve victory."

Together they stood and fought, men from the United States and their allies, united against the brutal aggression of Nazi tyranny.

From that alliance emerged another which has remained united in the defense of Europe. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has kept the peace in Europe for forty years in the face of aggression from new enemies, those of international terrorism and Soviet expansionism.

Today let us remember the valor and heroism of those courageous soldiers who fought oppression, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in bloody combat and those who pushed on to take the beaches and then to liberate Europe. They gave so much that we might remain free.

Let us then rededicate ourselves, together with our allies, to remaining strong and ever-vigilant in the face of aggression, to remaining faithful to the principles of freedom and justice which our country has always cherished.
